BEYOND ITHACA: MEMORIES and MEDITATIONS
The current body of work is a biographical snapshot of the artists life as he makes sense of his birthplace roots through the mythology and literature of Ancient and Modern Greece, within the contextual influence of growing up and living on the Australian continent. "Ithaca" refers to Homers Odyssey: the mythology and tales within the Odyssey, and to the nineteenth century Greek poet Kavafi. Ithaca for Kavafi was symbolic of the never ending journey that is life: the eternal quest for wholeness and completeness - the return to the “source” of what one considers “home”. The “Ithaca” of Kavafi is a bridge in the artists journey
that moves him beyond the language, images and imaginings of Homers “Ithaca”, making it possible for the artist to explore "Ithaka" through his experiences in a radically different place known as Terra Australis. The primordial wildness, extremes and differences of Terra Australis challenge the artists notions of what the ultimate resting point is, that enables one to call a place “home”. |
